Facing Up to the ADA

Barbara and Sidney Ander know firsthand the prejudices and barriers that separate the hearing-impaired from the rest of society.  They are both profoundly deaf.

That’s why the husband-wife team founded Compu-TTY, the largest company in the Southwest that markets devices for the hearing-impaired.

By offering telecommunication products and a consulting service that caters to the hearing-impaired, the Anders hope to break through the soundless world that isolates others like themselves.  Their advocacy work is both personal and professional.

“The largest disabled group in the country is the hearing-impaired, but people don’t notice them,” explains Sidney Ander, who opened the business in the mid-1980s.  “It’s an invisible handicap.”
