Offering a voice to the deaf

A private silence surrounds Barbara and Sid Ander, but their communication efforts speak volumes.

The Anders, who are both deaf, manufacture and distribute TTY machines – a tool that enables the deaf to communicate by phone.

When the couple moved to Fort Worth from New York in 1979, the realized there were limited resources available for the deaf in the South compared to the East.  Sid said there were no mainstream programs available and all of Fort Worth’s deaf children were crammed into one school with only two interpreters.

“It was like this area was 20 years behind,” Barbara said.
